How to choose a CDL school: a practical checklist
Registry status tells you a school can deliver ELDT. It does not tell you whether the school is a good fit. Ask these questions before you sign anything.
- Is the school on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry for the exact class you need? Some locations are registered for Class B only, or for theory only. Our listing pages show which programs each location is registered for.
- Does it offer behind-the-wheel training on public roads, not just a range?
- What is the total cost in writing? Ask about tuition, permit and testing fees, the DOT physical, drug screening, and the truck rental for test day.
- How much time do you get behind the wheel, and what is the student-to-truck ratio?
- Is the training paid for by a carrier? If so, read the contract for how long you must work there and what you owe if you leave early.
- Is funding available? Many states put CDL programs on their WIOA eligible training provider lists. Ask your local American Job Center. Veterans can ask whether the program is approved for GI Bill benefits.
- What are the schedules and the start dates? Ask about full-time, part-time, evening and weekend options.
- Does the school help with job placement, and which carriers hire its graduates?
